Substance use disorder is a crippling problem increasing in reach and intensity in South Africa. Many persons attempt to find some relief from the everyday stresses of life by experimenting with mind- and mood-altering substances without understanding the addictive potential of these substances. What starts as an attempt to find relief can, and in many cases does end in a pit of pain, loneliness and despair for the experimenter and their families. Substance use disorder does not discriminate and the process of experimenting to becoming hopelessly addicted can happen to anyone, no matter how affluent or innocent.
Any form of substance use disorder has dyer financial consequences on the addict and on their significant others. Loss of employment due to the unmanageability of the addiction is a reality faced by many persons suffering from substance use disorder. A substance use disorder can drain a person to a point where they are financially, physically and spiritually bankrupt no matter their financial standing at the start of their active addiction. It is in many cases when the addict has nothing left that they finally hit rock bottom and become ready to enter rehabilitation and recovery. Many have used up all recourses available to them including the resources of their families and significant others and have no means to pay for expensive but much needed in-patient treatment. As recovering addicts, ourselves we have first-hand experience of how hopeless a situation is where you know you need help but are unable to afford it.
We endeavour to provide individuals and families who find them selves in need of in-patient services who are unable to afford it financial assistance. We understand that one person who is successfully rehabilitated and working a program of recovery, has the potential to affect many lives and help others to achieve freedom from active addiction. There is great power to one addict helping another. We want to be an example of this by giving others what was given to us, a chance to recover and make a difference.
We aim to provide persons suffering from substance use disorder who are in desperate need of but are unable to afford in-patient treatment with means to receive treatment and a second chance at life. We will focus our efforts to implement initiatives in order to spread the message of recovery and raise funds to pay for in-patient treatment of individuals who seek recovery but do not have the resources to enter treatment. We feel that No addict who seeks to recover need ever die.
Our vision is to give to others what was given to us, a second chance at life. A safe haven in which to achieve initial abstinence is essential to the process, and achieving this is exceptionally hard and often hopeless when you have nothing left or no where to turn to. Where hope for the desperate ends our vision starts.
We are professional addictions counsellors who are in recovery ourselves. We are trained in using diagnostic tools to gage the severity of a substance use disorder and recommend appropriate treatment strategies in each individual case presented. Representatives of Courage to Change will use professional tools and experience of recovery and treatment of addiction to identify key factors relating to attitude, motivation, psychological/cognitive functioning and physical condition to access the readiness of a person applying to enter treatment.
Courage to change will also be working with selected rehabilitation centres and these centres have their own screening processes in place to ensure their program of treatment will be able to help the individual applying for treatment. If the candidate is unsuccessful in applying for assistance or it is determined that they are not suitable for in-patient treatment endorsed by Courage to Change then they will be referred to institutions who will be able to assist.
